"The night belonged to a legend of the guitar world."
For those who arrived early and had completed their mandatory Slash merch purchase, New Zealand band Devilskin were on hand to dish up a meaty display of hard rock, heavy on strobe lights, smoke guns and black clothing. And this band can play.
Jennie Skulander, Devilskin’s super talented vocalist, delivered a committed performance that won over a decent-sized audience, while the rhythm section brought a ton of energy and wall of noise.
But the night belonged to a legend of the guitar world. Enter the one and only Slash! Leading with new cut The Call Of The Wild, the guitar God required minimal effort to please the masses. With genuine delivery and absolute certainty, Slash delivered that trademark Guns N’ Roses sound, unmistakable with every lick and riff, and the fans loved him for it.
His new album, Living The Dream, received high rotation as expected, but the show did not suffer for it. Straight at the throat songs like Serve You Right, Mind Your Manners and Driving Rain were great additions to the catalogue, and while his exterior was calm and cool, the riff heavy songs and epic lead work were constant and ferocious.
Add Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators into the mix and you have a sonic overload. Each member brought fantastic showmanship, serious ability and a super tight performance. Kennedy was fun to watch as he interacted with the crowd and allowed each member their own time to shine.
Back From Cali, We’re All Gonna Die and a tribute to Lemmy, Doctor Alibi, had fans in awe, while Gunners’ Night Train and its accompanying 10-minute solo was received with a massive roar.
