This LA duo are truly doing their own thing
Vow’s restrained, industrial dark-pop is engulfed in a dreamy wash of foreboding piano chords and contemplative electro stylings. Brooding, new wave synths subdue these moreish, unusual dance tracks. Julia Blake’s wistful vox and lyrics have an amateurish ring at times, but they’re ultimately charming especially in longing closer Escapist. Palm is a more optimistic, sweetly melodic offering, driven by jangly, romantic guitar and innocent, simultaneous boy-girl singing. But it’s still very much contained within their art-rock ethos. This LA duo are truly doing their own thing and it’s cohesive, absorbing and occasionally even fun.
