Live Review: Trancition: Suae, DJ Wasteland

With DJ Wasteland on the decks already, a few punters were mingling in the VIP area upstairs while security and the bar staff enjoyed the calm before the storm.

Spinning more recent tracks like Trouble, and Our Love as well as an appearance by Technotronic’s Pump Up The Jam, Wasteland got booties shaking on the dance floor early on. There wasn’t a misstep on the decks anywhere, the bass line pushing the melodies to the brink and setting the bar even higher.

And after a killer two-and-a-half-hour set Wasteland made way for Sydney’s hardstyle shogun Jason Suae.

The title of hardstyle for his genre is pretty accurate, there is no airy fairy trance melody floating in the ether on its own, but a good kick in the proverbials from the bass line. The operative concept here is that the trance-style melodies aren’t on their own, they still make a strong appearance in his tracks. With the likes of Secrets and The Kids it’s easy to see why he’s able to convert the trance masses to hardstyle, or hard trance as it’s also known. It’s surprising not to see more glow sticks making the rounds, but nonetheless the club could certainly hold its own against any warehouse rave.

Of course without the blissful grins from the chemically-induced euphoria. Needless to say if you haven’t already got his tracks in your running mix, get ‘em there. Unlike some other DJs he has this connection with the crowd that speaks volumes for his passion for what he does. Suae is one of the masterminds behind Masif in Sydney bringing back harder dance music – if the show at Parker is anything to go on that movement will continue to go from strength to strength.
