Live Review: The 1975, Circa Waves

Circa Waves' track Young Chasers ignited the floor with their pop percussion and catchy riffs. 100 Strangers was met with flailing limbs as the punters danced, setting the scene for the sweat soaked dance floor that was soon to come.

So Long followed with thick bass and tapping drums as drinks sprayed across the front of the floor creating a confetti-like visual. They balanced alternative-rock on a thin tightrope as they flipped between indie guitar and pop vocals. Yet, the band maintained an intense energy throughout their set showing off their youth and zest for performing.

UK-based rock'n'roll lords The 1975 took the stage clutching what one can only assume was a lukewarm bottle of chardonnay and a lit cigarette. Scratching static and pulsing lights allowed the screaming women in the crowd to lose their minds in anticipation. The City kicked off their incredible set with pumping percussion and strobe lights.

A twinkling lullaby came in the form of So Far (It’s Alright) as the crowd lunged around to the intricate anthem. Sweet guitar and soft vocals from Matthew Healy made for a memorable rendition. Settle Down invited feverish dancing with its layered bass and catchy lyrics, while Heart Out featured a cheeky smattering of saxophone. Girls lit the night with just that. Their crowd was filled with an imbalanced ratio of women to men, and the screeching of female voices could be heard for hours afterwards.  

Their encore was exactly as it should be. Quaint piano made for a stunning rendition of Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You, while Chocolate was celebrated with peppery percussion and fan adoration. However, Sex would be their final act and would take the night out with streaming bass and shredding guitar. The 1975 sure know how to throw a party.
