Live Review: Tame Impala, Midnight Juggernauts

Midnight Juggernauts opened the evening with a confession that their keyboards were a little dusty and they had been off the radar for a while. Unfortunately, you could tell. Their music was still fun and catchy with cheesy disco beats, dramatic vocals and intergalactic-sounding synth effects, but it wasn't as tight and energetic as it should be. Some new tunes were thrown into the mix with the promise of an album to come a little later in the year, but it was their old faithfuls Shadows and Into The Galaxy that really got the crowd grooving.

With the first strains of It's Not Meant To Be, Tame Impala had the audience eating out of their palms. Colourful lights and swirling geometric visuals were perfect for their dreamy psychedelic rock. Old and young alike had eyes closed and limbs waving, belting out choruses word for word. Kevin Parker's vocals sounded deliciously effortless and though super-chilled on stage, the energy never dropped.

Hit after hit from both of their albums gave the people everything they came for and more, with funky instrumentals thrown in to mix it up. Despite the band working like a well-oiled machine, it never felt like they were going through the motions. Elephant brought out the grungier edge to their music, with every head banging along to the addictive pulse while Feels Like We Only Go Backwards had friends hugging and arms waving.

Parker admitted it was their first time headlining the venue, which must mean that they are a “super massive band with lots of fans”. One look around the room confirmed this – and one minute of listening explained why they have earned it.
