"Are we laughing at him or with him?"
Scott Dooley doesn’t exactly endear himself to the crowd.
In fact he spends the greater part of an hour telling us, and quite graphically, how much of a bad person he is. Centered on the parting words of his ex-girlfriend and her advice that he will die alone, Dooley recalls the self-inflicted tribulations of his past 12 months including a miserable one night stand, a horror sex story and murderous fantasies, all tied in between tangents of his tales of living in New York City. The mischievous former radio host shares his self-pity and how he has now come out the other end, but the audience is constantly conflicted, are we laughing at him or with him, and does that even matter?
