"A South Australian export at its best."
Germein Sisters brought their energetic sound to the Fringe for a one-night show at the Arkaba Hotel supported by the soulful singer Dusty Lee, who played stripped-back versions of songs by the Adelaide group Wanderers.
Formed by sisters Georgia, Ella and Clara, Germein Sisters are originally from the Adelaide Hills but have enjoyed a growing success internationally supporting big acts such as Little Mix. In addition to their tight harmonies, they also play electric guitar, drums, cajon, keys, bass and electric cello. Germein Sisters' sound is fresh and uplifting, with songs suited to a younger audience, although, interestingly, the audience at Arkaba was perhaps an older demographic.
From the moment Germein Sisters hit the stage, their energy was palpable and there was a feel-good vibe all around. The banter between songs, in particular from Ella, was delightful, giving the crowd great insight into the chemistry between these sisters. It is clear that this family harmonise both on and off stage. They played through new songs like Talking, released earlier this month, and older material like It's A Shame and Move On. They had some fun when presenting a compilation of work from those they have previously toured or performed with, moving easily between styles and demonstrating variety in their repertoire. Their apparent ease with which Germein Sistesr play their instruments allowed for much dancing and goofing around onstage, which contributed to audience enjoyment as they participated in Germein-led clapping or singing.
The original songs have wonderful youthful appeal, while also gaining inspiration from a wide range of subject matter. One of the highlights was Georgia's ballad Because You Breathe, which is a song she says she wrote for a friend who was navigating a hard place. This song's stripped-back keys slowed the tempo before Germein Sisters returned to their fast-paced set. This tight-knit trio excel in exhibiting a mix of fun and musical elements. Great role models, Germein Sisters are also a funky and striking group of young, powerful women. A South Australian export at its best.
