Album Review: Clubfeet - Heirs And Graces

An infectious tune broke out during 2012 – it seemed like every time the radio turned on, that song was playing. The song is called Heartbreak, and it is by a Melbourne-via- Cape Town five-piece by the name of Clubfeet, featuring Chela. Chances are you'd never heard those names before, but you would have after hearing that song over and over. It has beautiful reverb-fuelled guitar, an ambient synth, and a very basic bass and drum section; resulting in a perfect duet. The name sounds like a breakup song, but the song itself sounds like the most beautiful event in the world.

A number of influences come to mind – Hot Chip, for one. But the most similar Australian act would be Voltaire Twins, with their lo-fi vocals and happy pop, disco and electronica setting the backdrop. It is a very full sound, with a great guitar pitch and a joyous drumbeat – you just can't help but feel positive! Acapulco & LA is the prime example of that same infectious feel, with a very summery vibe. Not a lame 'happy for the sake of being happy' kind of song, but one that is genuinely fuelled by talent and makes you want to dance (which is very difficult to find, despite living in a world where everyone seems to be making 'dance' music).

Get Loose is very much a party track, with an abundance of electronica throughout – it was definitely written with the intent to get people up on their feet. Clubfeet rapidly switch between chilled beats and modern disco, combining those conventions with each other. And it works great.
