Live Review: Bleeding Knees Club, Together PANGEA, VOIID

The sweater weather creeps in as the sun sets over Brisbane tonight and, as doors open at The Zoo, the stairs are already lined with fans of Bleeding Knees Club, ready for another one of their extravagant Valley shows.

Those who've been to a Bleeding Knees Club show before would already be familiar with our local punk legends VOIID, who run on stage and wave at their fans, both regular and new. Within seconds of guitar-lord Kate McGuire shredding into a riff, a small mosh has already gathered. And as our favourite frontwoman Anji Greenwood kicks into a wild display during Forever Teenage, injuries already seem to be present at this early stage. Due to this and so many other countless reasons, VOIID will continue to amaze and draw crowds.

Anyone who's picked up a skateboard and broken a leg will be familiar with Together PANGEA, an American rock band from Santa Clarita, California. It's always a fine treat when Brisbane gets any form of Cali skate rock. As the band tear into Looked In Too, the fans in the mosh pack into a brutal sweat pit. It's impossible to breathe against bones crushing against each other, but it's also so amazing! At one point during Together PANGEA's set, Bleeding Knees Club frontman Alex Wall runs out on stage to pick up guitarist William Keegan for a shoulder ride! They finish their set with Too Drunk To Come and Sick Shit but the crowd wants more and after a little deliberation the band jump right back on stage to deliver yet another track — pure perfection.

In the last year, we've seen Bleeding Knees Club pack out The Foundry and Brunswick Street Mall. This venue fills up with more familiar faces as the incredible four-piece, sporting make-up that calls to mind KISS, begin their set with Cyber Doom and Sick Feeling.

As they begin playing Camp Out, there's a sense of incredible joy and roughness in the mosh. Whether it's due to people belting out the lyrics, trying to save their necks from stage divers or accidentally headbutting each other, it's an overall incredibly energetic set. The band continue to demonstrate their prowess with Chew The Gum, Bad Guys and new single Case. They even bring the VOIID girls back out on stage to help perform Teenage Girls and Beach Slut.

Alex Wall, Michael Barker and Nick Leighton all leave the stage, but Gio Alexander's reamains onstage plucking a single bass note over and over, which the crowd eventually crowd sing along to, demanding another song. The three other boys jump back on stage and ask us what we think they should play. There's calls for Have Fun and Truth Or Dare. Making a quick decision, they burst into Have Fun and the exhausted crowd power through for a big finish.

To say Bleeding Knees Club are respected as a band in Brisbane is a huge understatement. They're bound to continue to pack out venues and deliver great shows in our city. What a night!
