Live Review: Birds In Row, Calvaiire, COLLOSVS, World View, Cold Front

A Wednesday night gig with two headlining bands from France? It sounds like a recipe for disaster and a very broke promoter.

Luckily it didn’t turn out that way. The Crown & Anchor started to fill up as the bands waited around for the sound engineer to show up, but being the pub’s $2 beer night, this didn’t seem to be much of an issue.

Local supports Cold Front opened to a half-full room, which, as it turned out, didn’t grow much over the course of the night. Incredibly tight for an opening act, Cold Front powered through their set of heavy hardcore tunes and set the bar high for the rest of the bill.

Adelaide locals, World View were up next and had the crowd moving to their “youth crew” sound. World View smashed out a relatively short set, which fitted in well with the longer sets from the other bands.

Melbourne metal five-piece COLLOSVS started strong and hard, and didn’t slow down on that ferocity for their entire set. The energetic vocalist showed his talent, along with the rest of the band, with not one song falling short. Plenty of heavy riffs, and finishing with their three-part song, Unholy, there was never a dull moment.

French outfit CALVAIIRE blasted through their set in what can only be described as pure chaos. Their songs were filled with heavy ever-changing riffs, chaotic stabs, versatile vocals and an energy that captured the audience’s attention and never let it go.

Main headliners Birds In Row had all payers inside and at the front of the stage ready to hear their unique style of hardcore. Launching into the opening track off their debut album, the French three-piece held the audience in the palm of their collective hand with their intensity. Playing songs mostly off their latest record, they also played four new songs that were slightly more technical and a natural progression from where they’d left off on the latest record, bound to be another exceptional release. Finishing their explosive set with the title track of their debut release You, Me, And The Violence, violent and powerful riffs mixed in with big sweeping melodic chords, Birds In Row, along with the preceding bands left the Adelaide crowd in awe.
