Album Review: Betty Who - Betty

Free from the shackles of a major record label, the now independent Betty Who, aka Jessica Newham, can make music on her own terms. Going it on your own can be hard for any artist, but Newham has a supportive fanbase and her third album, simply titled Betty, is a bright pop spark with a fun, romantic spirit.

The Australian-born singer makes a splash with I Remember's quirky pop beat and its loveable lyrics about how relationships aren't perfect. Marry Me explores her love for her fiance Zak Cassar with danceable Katy Perry circa Teenage Dream vibes. Lead single Ignore Me is empowering, Newham pouring her heart out about being led on by both men and her old record label – especially her old record label. For a split second The One could be mistaken for a Backstreet Boys track, until Newham’s killer vocals come in over the '90s dance-pop beat. At least we know where she got the inspiration. Betty shows Betty Who is an underrated artist, and one who needs some more love from Australia.
