"We’re all big Kate Bush fans."
If you’ve had just about enough of Running Up That Hill in recent weeks, perhaps The Wombats’ take on the Kate Bush classic will pull you from The Upside Down.
Following a slew of artists covering the track since its appearance in Netflix series Stanger Things made it the biggest song in the world, the UK trio have made it their own, stripping things back for an intimate performance for triple j’s Like A Version.
The band stopped by the studio while touring the country in support of their latest album, Fix Yourself, Not The World.
“It’s such a great song – we’re all big Kate Bush fans. And then obviously recently it’s had a real resurgence from Stranger Things, so it made us think, ‘Oh, maybe we could give that a go?’” drummer Dan Haggis said.
“First heard Kate Bush driving in a van, like on a cassette tape, across the south of Spain to my cousin’s wedding when I was like… I don’t know, 10 or something. And it was Don’t Give Up with Peter Gabriel. But like, that was on my mum’s cassette and I was like, ‘Oh, I really like this. I love her voice.’”

Since appearing in Stranger Things, the track has gone to #1 across the globe, a position it has held in Australia for the past two weeks.
In a rare interview this week with BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Bush reacted to the song’s new life: “It's just extraordinary. It's such a great series, so I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this. It's so exciting but it's quite shocking really — the whole world's gone mad."
