Vance Joy’s 2013 monster hit Riptide has impressively featured on the UK’s Official Charts’ Top 40 Biggest Songs of 2023. Riptide is the only song by an Australian artist to land on the round-up.
The UK’s Official Charts shared the 40 massive songs that dominated airwaves last year, including the non-surprises – Flowers by Miley Cyrus, Sprinter by Dave and Central Cee, Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero, Kill Bill by SZA, As It Was by Harry Styles, Dance The Night by Dua Lipa, Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, and Die For You by The Weeknd.
Christmas music took over the charts elsewhere, but not just for the festive period – Wham’s Last Christmas appears, as does All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey.
Riptide landed on the chart at #40, surrounded by Stephen Sanchez, Ed Sheeran, Tiesto and Tate McRae, Meghan Trainor and Lizzy McAlpine. The Killers’ 2003 classic Mr Brightside also appeared at #22.
Riptide didn’t only take over the UK in 2023; it was also the biggest song by a local artist on the ARIA Charts and on Spotify. In late November, Spotify shared the statistics: The most-streamed local songs in Australia were Vance Joy’s single Riptide at #1, followed by The Kid LAROI’s Stay featuring Justin Bieber, How Do I Say Goodbye by Dean Lewis, another appearance by The Kid LAROI with Love Again, and last year’s triple j Hottest 100 winning track, Say Nothing by Flume and MAY-A.
The Music’s Stephen Green has praised Vance Joy’s impact over the last ten years, writing in a recent feature on The Music, “While we’ve been closely following the plight of the artists that AREN’T in the chart, perhaps its time we stepped back and celebrated the amazing achievement of an Australian song and an Australian musician that continues to engage the Australian public ten years after its release.”

Green continued, “Ten years on, the song is resonating more than ever, with new fans connecting with it every day. Ten years ago, Vance Joy released a seminal track that will forever live in the great Australian songbook.”
