Troye Sivan Amuses Americans By Explaining “Bush Doofs”

Troye Sivan has educated Americans on the importance of Australian culture, filling them in on “bush doofs” and “poof doofs”.

Appearing on the Late Show with Seth Meyers this week to promote his upcoming co-headlining US and Canadian tour with Charli XCX, the Johannesburg-born, Perth-raised singer informed American viewers of a uniquely Australian idea of a good time.

“So, a ‘doof’ is a party, like (fist pumps) ‘doof, doof, doof’,” Sivan explained. “And then a bush doof is a doof in the bush.”

Meyers responded that the description was “self-explanatory”, but Sivan wasn’t done yet, discussing the LGBTQIA+ iteration of the term.

Detailing the term “poof doof” and hinting at the famous Melbourne nightclub of the same name, the Got Me Started singer continued, “I don’t know if this is a slur in America … It’s fine [pointing to himself, referencing that he’s gay]. A poof doof is a gay party.”

Sivan’s explanation of a “poof doof” is sending video footage on the Late Show with Seth Meyers TikTok viral.

Australians, in particular, seem shocked to hear “poof doof” on American television.

Some of the most entertaining comments are, “POOF DOOF MENTIONED ON SETH MEYERS”, “Not Poof Doof going international”, “Ok, I need Charli and Troye to do a song called poof doof”, “POOF DOOF PAID HIM”, “I met Troy at poof doof in Melb and I [headbutted] him [accidentally] lol, “POOF DOOF REPRESENT”, “Poof Doof is the best club in Melbourne”, “Love that he’s sharing our culture with the world”, and “poof doof is the coolest thing I learned this week”.

Troye Sivan was the biggest winner at this week’s APRA Music Awards, taking home the prestigious Song of the Year award for Rush.

The Music recently named Sivan’s latest album, Something To Give Each Other, one of the best Australian albums of 2023.

Sivan returned to the spotlight in October with his triumphant and notably hopeful third album commemorating “sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship.”

Reviewing the album for The Music, David James Young wrote that “what really sells Something To Give Each Other, ultimately, is how far Sivan is willing to go”.

Young explained: “From his innermost feelings to his outermost desires, from his quietest ballads to his biggest disco infernos, Sivan wants everyone to know exactly who he is. He may as well, too – after all, he's finally sure of it.”
