The Two Stars Dolly Parton Couldn’t Land For 'Rockstar'

Dolly Parton has revealed the two names she wanted on her new album, Rockstar, but couldn’t land by the end of working on the collaborative effort.

Due to scheduling conflicts and a duet that just didn’t materialise, Parton told Taste of Country Nights that Mick Jagger and Cher were the two stars she wishes were on the album.

“He was willing to do it — willing to work with me on something — but we could never catch up until I ran out of time, and he was working on his, as you know now, their new album. So, I missed him,” Parton said about the bad timing between herself and the Rolling Stones singer.

On Cher, she added, “Cher and I were gonna do something. We never did find the right thing to do. She's not rock, but she's Cher, you know?! So those are the two that I had hoped to get that I missed not having the most, I think.”

The list of names that appear on Rockstar is near-endless, with the tracklist featuring Richie Sambora (former Bon Jovi guitarist), Steve Perry of Journey fame, Rob Halford from Judas Priest, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty, Heart’s Anne Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Debbie Harry, Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Lizzo and many more. Parton made Rockstar after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last November. At the time, it was an honour she didn’t feel she deserved.

“Since I am in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I think [with] this album, I brought so many great artists back into this album that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that deserve to be,” Parton explained in a recent The Music cover story interview.

She added, “I felt like I had to not only earn my keep, I tried to pay homage to a lot of these great artists that should be in there that are not and to the ones that are that I've gotten the opportunity to sing with.”

Rockstar is out now via Parton’s independent Butterfly Records and Big Machine Records.
