Tegan & Sara Launch LGBTQ Foundation To Fight Trump's 'Repressive Legislation'

Canadian indie pop sisters Tegan & Sara have launched an LGBTQ rights foundation in order to "fight for economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women".

As Pitchfork has noted, the duo have penned a long open letter to explain the mission statement of the Tegan & Sara Foundation, stating, "Your personal histories of injustice and discrimination at home, school, work, and church have inspired us to use our public status to speak out about the struggles of the LGBTQ community."

Tegan & Sara also cite the "incoming Trump administration" as inspiration — "We will fight against the repressive legislation of the incoming Trump administration. We will fight against regressive homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic legislation. We will fight for economic, racial and gender justice."

While on tour this year in the US in support of their newest record, Love You To Death, the act "met with local fans, youth activists, researchers, legislators, and nonprofits working tirelessly to promote LGBTQ equality".

"We learned that the lack of federal funding for LGBTQ services, limited training for doctors about the needs of their LGBTQ patients, and severe workplace discrimination are disproportionately affecting women. Most importantly, we learned that LGBTQ women and girls are feeling overwhelmingly rejected and left behind," they write.

The Grammy-nominated Canadian band are heading to our shores in March for a number of shows, as well as appearances on the Twilight Zoo series in Melbourne and Sydney.
