Pete Murray Is In The Studio; Is He Changing Direction?

Pete Murray is back in the studio. That's news in itself, but interestingly, the beloved singer-songwriter is accompanied by producer James Angus, who's known for his work with Example, Stace Cadet, Carmoflage Rose, and The Veronicas. 

Ahead of his upcoming Best Of European tour dates in May/June, fans might get to hear new music alongside tracks they know and love.

His most recent EP, Before I Go, was born in the middle of the pandemic and is the companion to his previous EP, The Night. The release was brought to life with the help of Garrett Kato and various writers in the UK and the US. However, despite how he effortlessly pivoted to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, their respective arrivals weren’t quite as he had first planned.

“The plan was to put these two EPs out, and then we had a tour booked for it,” Murray recalled to The Music. “The Night was the first one, and that came out after the first year that COVID hit, and we had a tour locked, and everything lined up for it. But we changed plans and pushed the tour back."

“I think my fanbase still likes my albums,” he noted. “I think the majority of my fanbase still like to listen to my songs and probably some of the songs that aren’t the hit singles. But it makes total sense to release it as an EP, and then maybe tie it together again later.  

“I think you’ve got to be a little bit more intelligent in the way you do music these days,” he added. “Just how you put it out there and how you get it before the biggest crowd possible."

“I think a lot of people probably still, if they've never seen me live, they'll think of So Beautiful, which is a pretty mellow song. But my live shows are super dynamic and it’s really a lot more fun.” So, we wonder what Murray's next effort will sound like, with James Angus on board. 

Melodies that make you dance? Harmonies, like the producer would know well from working with The Veronicas, and a pop tune? A few more pianos, a la If We Never Dance Again? Another modern pop single like Burning Up? We're not sure what's next for the troubadour, but count us excited.
