Ahead of its official launch today (February 27), Lydia Williams – world-renowned goalkeeper for the Matildas – caught up with one of her biggest idols, P!nk, to present the artist with the very first piece of kit from her long-awaited Nike collaboration.
Matildas fans spent months clamouring for Nike to release a goalkeeper jersey after the Matildas soared at last year’s Women’s World Cup. It’ll be the first time the brand have released a goalkeeper jersey for any Australian team – male or female – and Williams is (understandably) hyped to the nines about it.
Appearing on The Today Show this morning, the goalie said she’s “super excited” about the launch, noting: “I think we’ve had everyone asking when the goalkeeper jersey is going to go on sale. We’re doing really well in just the Women’s World Cup jersey sales, but now we get to include goalkeepers in that – I think it’s pretty awesome.”
Australia's Golden Girls the Matildas will be taking on Uzbekistan, playing for a spot in the Paris Olympics.

P!nk received the first jersey minted for the retail batch, having it hand-delivered to her and her daughter, Willow Moore, backstage at Marvel Stadium last Saturday (February 24). “She grabbed it right away,” Williams told The Sydney Morning Herald. “She was like, ‘These are sick.’
“She loves Australia, and she loves Australians. And supporting women’s sport, she’s a huge advocate. When she realised it was about the World Cup and the first release of the jerseys, her excitement and genuine curiosity... She’s smiling big in the photo, so she’s definitely pumped about it. She’s like the Taylor Swift of our generation. If Pink had that level of social media back then she would be the equivalent to that.”
Williams added in her Today Show chat that P!nk and Willow “were so appreciative” of their gift. “It’s so exciting to be able to share our pride and joy in the goalkeeper jersey with superstars,” she said, “and [have them] show their support as well.”
The jersey went on sale at 12pm AEDT today, and sold out within a matter of minutes. You can head here to keep an eye on restocks, if any pop up. In the meantime, take a close-up look at the jersey in a promotional video below:
In a review of the first date on P!nk’s current Australian tour – which she performed at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Friday February 9 – Alasdair Belling wrote for TheMusic.com.au: “P!nk is changing what it means to be a pop star, and if this tour is anything to go by, she’s also changing what stadium performance looks like. Perhaps most excitingly of all, P!nk’s music remains as fresh as ever; there was no sense of things feeling recycled.”
The show itself ended up being momentarily paused when a pregnant fan in the mosh pit went into labour.
The tour as a whole continues in Adelaide tonight, with more shows to follow in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville – see here for more info on the entire run.
