The National Indigenous Music Awards made an emotional return tonight, with some of the country’s best artists honoured at the iconic Darwin Amphitheatre.
The highly anticipated event saw Yolngu man Baker Boy claim two coveted awards, Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, following the release of his stunning debut record, Gela, while Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung indie artist Jem Cassar-Daley’s success over the past year in the wake of debut EP I Don’t Know Who To Call saw her awarded New Talent of the Year.
The Music’s Cover Artist this week, King Stingray were awarded Song of the Year for Milkumana, which features on their self-titled debut album that dropped on Friday, while Malyangapa and Barkindji woman Barkaa claimed Film Clip of the Year for King Brown and Indigenous Outreach Projects earned Community Clip of the Year.
Ngemba rapper, drummer and speaker Dobby took out the Archie Roach Foundation Award.

Highlights of the evening included a touching tribute to the late Uncle Archie Roach by the whole NIMAs cast who played We Won’t Cry, as well as Gurrumul’s Hall of Fame induction, which saw a performance by his brother and Saltwater Band co-founder, Manuel Dhurrkay and Shellie Morris.
Attendees were also treated to performances from King Stingray, Birdz, Yirrmal, Bumpy and more.
