12 Most Anticipated Video Games Of 2024

Many believe 2023 was one of the best years for new video game releases – Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake II, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Baldur’s Gate 3... We could go on, but you get the picture. The question on everybody’s lips is whether 2024 can replicate that success.

We think it can.

While there’s sadly no Grand Theft Auto VI (2025 can’t come quick enough), there are stacks of enticing titles on our release radar we can’t wait to dive into, including Skull and Bones, Rise of the Rōnin, and the much-talked-about Marvel’s Wolverine.

To make sure you don’t miss out on the big releases, we’ve put our heads together and come up with this collection of the Purple Sneakers’ most anticipated games of 2024.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (January 26)

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC

The latest installment in the much-loved Yakuza franchise sees our heroes Ichiban Kasuga and Kiryu Kazuma head to Hawaii, with Kasuga searching for his long-lost mother and Kazuma dealing with his cancer diagnosis.

It sounds a little heavy, but expect plenty of cartoonish violence and laughs with lots of fun side quests, including the ability to sing karaoke.

Tekken 8 (January 26)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Bandai Namco is pulling out all the stops for Tekken 8, even roping in Succession’s Brian Cox to narrate the latest trailer.

As far as gameplay goes, it looks like more of the same with 34 characters to choose from and a storyline focused on the final battle between father and son duo Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama. One for the button mashers.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League (February 2)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Set in the Batman: Arkham video game universe, this title from developer Rocksteady Studios is an open-world extravaganza where you can pick to play as Suicide Squad members Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, or King Shark.

Having chosen your favourite character, embark on a mission to take down Brainiac and several members of the Justice League he has brainwashed. If the game is anything like the trailer, prepare for a vibrant, violent comic book adventure with plenty of odd humour.

Skull and Bones (February 16)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

It feels like we’ve been waiting years for this game to drop, but it’s finally arriving this February.

Inspired by the naval battles of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, this action-adventure game is set during the 17th century with a focus on story and sea battles.

Featuring an open-world environment and several different game modes, it’s time to sharpen your scabbard and adjust your eyepatch as you set sail to plunder the high seas.

Homeworld 3: War Games (March 8)

Platforms: PC

It’s been 20 years since we last had a Homeworld game, so expectations are high.

The third game in the immensely popular real-time strategy series, first announced in 2019, has a focus on the single-player campaign with a new co-op mode and advanced gameplay ideas developer Blackbird Interactive believes will be game changers.

Princess Peach: Showtime! (March 22)

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Although Princess Peach has starred in her own game before (2005’s Super Princess Peach), this latest title looks like finally giving Peaches her flowers.

Featuring similar gameplay to recent Mario games, Princess Peach: Showtime! finds Peach battling the evil villain Wicked Grape to save her show at the Sparkle Theatre.

Peach also has the ability to transform into various characters - including Kung Fu Peach and Detective Peach - to take out her foes. Where do we sign up?

Rise of the Rōnin (March 22)

Samurai Games have been all the rage since Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice took out Game of the Year in 2019, but Team Ninja’s Rise of the Rōnin finally looks like a title that’s more than just a carbon copy.

Rise of the Rōnin allows you to create your own character with a storyline set against the backdrop of the Boshin War. You can use all manner of weaponry to slice and dice your opponents, with the flaming sword shown in the trailer the one we are looking forward to wielding.

Black Myth: Wukong (August 20)

Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Based on the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West – which was turned into the classic Japanese show Monkey Magic – it’s not known how closely this action role-playing game will follow the original story.

The reason we are excited about this one is the gameplay trailer, showcasing fantastic graphics, weird characters, and plenty of action.

The only worry is developer Game Science is an unknown, and recent controversies concerning work culture could impact the game’s release.

Star Wars Outlaws (TBA)

Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

All Star Wars fans want is an open-world game, and their wish is about to come true with Outlaws.

Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, this third-person action-adventure game enables you to take part in several heists across the universe as you interact with NPCs and visit new worlds never seen before in the Star Wars universe.

The best part – the Force doesn’t play a major role, with less focus on the Jedi and more of an emphasis on the greater Star Wars universe.

Marvel’s Wolverine (TBA)

Platforms: PS5

The chances of Marvel’s Wolverine dropping this year are slim, but we’re still going to include this title as one of our most anticipated games of 2024.

The trailer gives away nothing but does give hope this game will be a bloody affair and allow you to wreak havoc with Logan’s adamantium claws. The rumour mill suggests this PS5 exclusive will be similar to the recent Spider-Man games, which also bodes well.

Ara: History Untold (TBA)

Platforms: PC

Fans of the long-running Civilization series will be all over this one. Ara: History Untold is a turn-based historical strategy game where you must lead your people from the beginning of history right up until the present day.

From the footage released, it looks smooth; let’s just hope the gameplay lives up to expectations.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando (TBA)

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

In a 2023 interview with Insider, cult director John Carpenter told the publication all he wants to do is “play video games and watch basketball.”

While a stint in the NBA is probably a pipedream, his love of video games has found The Thing director teaming with developer Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando.

After an experiment goes wrong, the Sludge God is released, turning everyday humans into flesh-eating zombies.

You take on the role of a commando tasked with stopping the undead invasion, with the game aimed at those who love “buddy-movie vibes and over-the-top humour, action, and horror of classic 80s cinema inspired by the legendary John Carpenter.”
