'The Music That I Hate The Most': M83 Slams EDM and 'Midnight City' Success

The sole remaining member of M83, best known for the 2011 megahit Midnight City, has sensationally slammed EDM by calling it “one of the genres [he] hates the most”.

Speaking in a recent interview with Consequence ahead of the release of his new album, Fantasy, Anthony Gonzales revealed that the gargantuan popularity of the track has been a source of contempt for the producer.

This, however, is despite the famous track pushing M83 into the stratosphere upon its release, with the song appearing in a Gucci commercial as well as being a staple in the sets of EDM giants like DJ Tiësto, Swedish House Mafia and Alison Wonderland.

“I mentioned this in an interview before, but it’s almost that I want to keep the fans of Midnight City away from entering — which I mean mostly as a bad joke,” Gonzalez told the publication.

“For me, the struggle with being a successful artist with that album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and especially with that track, Midnight City is that all of a sudden I had this huge EDM following.” 

He continued, “EDM is probably one of the styles of music that I hate the most. All of a sudden, I have these bro EDM DJs playing my music, and I just can’t even care less. Sometimes I wish that I could erase that fan base but I don’t think it’s possible to do that.”

It's certainly not the first time Gonzalez has blasted EDM and its fanbase, with the French artist telling Australian GQ in 2016, "I'm not interested by the music—or the people who like it either.”

In 2019, he also admitted to VICE, “These days, I kind of just want people to forget about me and my previous success— Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and Midnight City.”

As for his forthcoming record, which marks his first in seven years, Gonzales it will serve as a launchpad into a new era for M83.

“I truly believe that this Fantasy album is probably like the beginning of the next chapter of my career and I am truly excited about what’s next,” he said.

M83's ninth studio album, Fantasy, is scheduled to release on March 17th via Other Suns.
