"Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.”
Cat Power has announced the latest in her series of covers albums, set for release early next year.
Aptly titled Covers, the LP is the third for the musician - also known as Chan Marshall - to be predominantly comprised of cover versions (save for a reworking of her own track, Unhate - an updated version of the song Hate from 2008's The Greatest). It follows from the critically acclaimed Jukebox and The Covers Record - released in 2008 and 2000 respectively.
The opening track - a rendition of the Frank Ocean hit Bad Religion - came about after Marshall was having trouble performing her own song In Your Face while on tour in 2018.
“That song was bringing me down,” she admitted. “So I started pulling out lyrics from Bad Religion and singing those instead of getting super depressed."
She added, "Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.”
The release will also feature cover versions from the likes of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop, Billie Holiday, Lana Del Rey and many more.
