Husband-and-wife duo Ash Grunwald (multi-award-winning blues musician) and Danni Carr (host of the successful podcast How I Quit Alcohol) have teamed up for a powerful creative venture.
The couple are set to share a “candid, inspiring and deeply personal account” of their experiences of rising “from the depths of booze-soaked remorse” to living lives of sobriety in the new book, How I Quit Alcohol. The book will be released tomorrow (Friday, 13 September) in independent bookstores across the country.
According to a press release, Grunwald was at a crossroads in 2017. Watching his career flounder and his physical health deteriorate, the musician was exhausted from years on the road. Due to the pressures he felt, his lifestyle led to increased drinking.
Both Grunwald and Carr were stuck in a cycle of binge drinking and partying. Their lives changed when, along with some friends, the couple made the life-altering promise to abstain from consuming alcohol for a year.
That year, Grunwald wrote his first book, Surf By Day, Jam By Night. Following the release of the book, he interviewed world-class stars such as Jack Johnson, Kelly Slater, and Steph Gilmore. In those conversations, Grunwald discovered that many of his idols hardly drank alcohol, as they viewed it as an “obstacle” to achieving their dreams.
Six and a half years later, Grunwald has restructured his life by reshaping his habits and working to reprogram his thought patterns, all of which have helped revitalise his career.

Following the year of abstaining from alcohol, Carr has been facilitating life-changing alcohol-free programs that offer trauma-informed approaches to help people quit alcohol and change their lives.
How I Quit Alcohol has been described as a “comprehensive guide for anyone seeking to change their relationship with alcohol and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the wild world of rock & roll!”
Throughout the book, Grunwald and Carr openly discuss their personal experiences with alcohol, which include “the entertaining, shameful, and downright mortifying yet pivotal moments that led them to quit alcohol.”
Some of those moments include blacking out and waking up in an alleyway, vomiting on the shoes of an inspiration, excess binge drinking, shame, and more, making the book more than your typical memoir.
In addition to the experiences, How I Quit Alcohol is packed with “practical, easy-to-implement techniques, divine and motivational insights, and science-backed strategies” to empower readers to take control of their lives.
