Melbourne-born, Nashville-based indie folk artist Jordie Lane has made signing a record deal a physically dangerous activity by challenging himself to sign said deal while sledding through the snow.
After one of his favourite local spots, the Shelby Golf Course in Nashville, was snowed in, Lane was struck with a thought: you only sign your first-ever record deal once, so why not make the experience memorable, not just for himself but for anyone who witnesses it?
Signing a worldwide deal with ABC Music and The Orchard, Lane sled through the Shelby Golf Course while simultaneously trying to scribble his name down on the contract. Local Nashville artist GROUCHBUCKET joined Lane in the snow with a camera rig to film the thrilling moment.
A video filled with laughs and sending viewers the same rush Lane likely felt himself, it’s something that needs to be seen to be believed. You can watch the video below.
In addition to sharing his signing with ABC Music and The Orchard, Lane has announced that he’ll release his first album in six years, Tropical Depression, on Friday, 23 August.

Lane said about the album and signing in a press release, “I’ve spent my whole life being cautious and scared, so my first great hurdle to overcome was to finally decide I needed some help (and besides therapy and meds) say yes to a record deal, and when this snowstorm hit Nashville the week I was meant to sign, I decided to add some extra adrenaline and facing of fears to the occasion by trying to sign the contract inside a Sled, whizzing down an icy slope.”
He added, “My handwriting was disgusting, but I think it got the job done. Just to make sure, I finally got to meet the whole ABC team on a video call and signed the papers in front of them in a more legible fashion. And they are all so bloody lovely. They’d made their own ‘Tropical Depression’ drinks to celebrate, and I’m just so excited to work with them on this release.”
The album was recorded in Nashville with Grammy-nominated producer, engineer and instrumentalist Jon Estes (Kacey Musgraves, Dolly Parton), mixed by Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Marlon Williams) and mastered by Phillip Shaw Bova (Feist, Father John Misty, Angel Olsen).
Lane has also released his new single, The Changing Weather, today. Check out the music video below.
