The stripped-back ballad kicks off a new era for the enigmatic producer, with herself in the spotlight..

More Sophie More Sophie

Over the past few years, mysterious UK producer and PC Music affiliate SOPHIE (who now goes by female pronouns) has been pushing the boundaries of both electronic and pop music, whether it's through her solo work or collaborations with names including Madonna, Charli XCX, Cashmere Cat, Vince Staples and more. SOPHIE's knack for crafting invigorating and forward-thinking electronica has made her one of the most in-demand producers for names both big and small, which naturally, has led to a number of high profile collaborations. However, now two years since her last solo work PRODUCT, the now LA-based name has thrown herself into the spotlight on her new surprise single It's Okay To Cry.

It's Okay Top Cry takes on more of a traditional ballad sound similar to PRODUCT stand-out Just Like We Never Say Goodbye, with SOPHIE's whispering vocals (the first time they've ever appeared in a song) floating above an evolving, laid-back production which distances itself from SOPHIE's typically left-field sound until the last 30 seconds or so. It's a real evolution from the otherwise quite bubbly producer, not just in sound but also in image. SOPHIE is well-known for being more of a hidden name, even going as far as sending up a friend to DJ her Boiler Room appearance a few years back, but now, with her own vocals on display and a self-starring video clip, she's finally setting her foot into the limelight and rising to the long-awaited pedestal she deserves. It's Okay To Cry is out through MSMSMSM Inc on October 23, with SOPHIE to debut her new live show the day after with a performance at RBMA Festival Los Angeles.
