From Eclair Fifi to Kardajala Kirridarra, here are five unmissable acts to catch this weekend at the Melbourne Arts Precinct..

With 2017/2018's festival season still very much underway, Melbourne’s prestigious and much-loved boutique Sugar Mountain Festival is set to storm the Melbourne Arts Precinct this Saturday. Catering to the more underground and eclectic audiences of music, the festival very much has something for everyone, with names including Joey Bada$$ and A.B Original for fans of hip-hop and rap, to the famous Boiler Room once again returning with a stellar roster of acts, plus none other than Cut Copy on headline duties. In short, Sugar Mountain 2018 looks set to be a huge one. With set times having just been released (which can be seen here) we thought we’d help you about with a handful of acts we simply can’t wait to check out. If you need some help filling in those gaps on who to see come Saturday, here are five acts we highly recommend you check it.

Body Type

If you’re someone that likes to be on top of bands before they are about to explode, then catching Sydney four-piece Body Type at this year's Sugar Mountain is a must. Having toured with the likes of POND and Big Thief, Body Type were one of the biggest buzz acts at last years Bigsound and rightfully so too. Branding their sound lo-fi garage pop, the girls have a handful of dreamy hits thus far that includes 264 and shoegaze-y number Silver. A definite must-see.

Eclair Fifi

The Boiler Room is a massive drawcard for this prestigious Melbourne festival and our pick of the fantastic roster for the day is none other than Eclair Fifi. Real name Clair Stirling, Eclair Fifi is one of the most hardworking DJ’s across the UK airwaves, with achievements including being one of the founding members of label LuckyMe to hosting her own radio show at the age of 16, to now hosting her own show on BBC Radio as part of DJs We Trust. Having been raised on Detroit tech and Chicago house, you can expect an absolute masterclass in underground rhythms from Fifi at Sugar Mountain 2018. Still not sold? Just check out a set she threw down at Dekmantal 2017, for example.

Beaches

2018 marks the tenth anniversary of five-piece Beaches and what better way to help them celebrate this remarkable achievement then to catch them play at Sugar Mountain 2018. Having just released a double LP in 2017 titled Sounds of Spring, the Melbourne five-piece come armed with a bevy of dreamy punk tunes that are sure to be an early highlight of the day.

Kardajala Kirridarra

Another act that generated a lot of buzz at Bigsound 2017 was this incredible collective. Lead by songwriter/vocalist Eleanor Dixon and Melbourne producer/multi-instrumentalist Beatrice Lewis (of Beatrice & Haiku Hands), the chatter and hype about Kardajala Kirridarra looks set to continue into 2018 as they take the stage at Sugar Mountain on the weekend. The name Kardajala Kirridarra translates to ‘sandhill women’, with it being the name of the mysterious women from the sandhills community of Marlinja, NT. Telling important stories of the earth and women’s roles its energy and having wowed crowds at Golden Plains too, the power of Kardajala Kirridarra’s live performance is something that is a must-see.

Stella Donnelly

If you are yet to catch one of 2017's most influential break-outs Stella Donnelly play, may we give you this very timely reminder that Sugar Mountain presents as your first opportunity for the new year. Through Donnelly’s charismatic and unapologetic attitude, it’s her remarkable gift of being able to tell meaningful stories that have you gripped throughout her performance. We could sit here and praise this Perth favourite, but we’d much prefer you to catch her when she opens thing up at Dodds Street come Saturday at 12:30 PM. You basically have no excuse! One of the highlights of 2017 was Stella Donnelly's Mechanical Bull, stripped back to its roots for a captivating Live Session. If you’re yet to see it, make sure you watch it below.
