This morning, Taylor Swift fans arose to the delightful news that the Anti-Hero hitmaker is bringing her massive Eras tour to Australia in February 2024. Unfortunately, she’s only playing in two cities – Melbourne and Sydney, with two huge shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney’s Accor Stadium.

Presented by Frontier Touring, Swift’s Eras run also includes special guest Sabrina Carpenter, who’s making her Australian debut. Many of you may have been wondering: who is Sabrina Carpenter? Do I show up early to hear songs I don’t know?

To answer your questions, The Music has picked out the six essential Sabrina Carpenter songs you need to hear before attending any Taylor Swift Eras show down under, and we have some details about her career so far.

Sabrina Carpenter is an American singer and actress who made her music debut in 2014 with the single Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying, which stemmed from her debut EP of the same name and featured on her debut album, Eyes Wide Open. A folk-pop track written by Meghan Trainor, Carpenter then stretched her boundaries, moving further into pop music territory.

Her career in the entertainment industry began with early acting roles on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2011 and a recurring role on the Fox sitcom The Goodwin Games. 2013 saw Carpenter’s breakthrough when she was cast on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World and featured on the theme song Take On The World.

Like Disney peers before her, from Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter has enjoyed a successful music career. She’s released five albums to date, with her most recent, Emails I Can’t Send, released in July 2022. The album hit #44 on the ARIA Albums Chart, but with this incredible touring opportunity opening for Taylor Swift, her profile will surely grow in Australia in the coming months.

So, without further ado, here are the six Sabrina Carpenter songs you need to hear ahead of Taylor Swift's Australian Eras tour.

Nonsense

Nonsense is the fifth single from Emails I Can’t Send. It’s a song that belongs on the radio and Spotify playlists alongside your favourite current pop tracks. A trap-influenced pop number, Carpenter displays confidence beyond her years on a song about love and sensuality.

Thumbs

Thumbs couldn’t be more different to Nonsense. Where Nonsense is more low-key and led by a modern flowing trap beat, Thumbs is anchored by pulsing strings and electronics, commanding your attention from its opening. And that reggae-tinged break? It’s so catchy. Of course, you expect artists to evolve as their careers continue, but this single from her second album, EVOLution, is huge.

Skin

On Skin, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter fans were convinced that the pair had written diss tracks about each other after a love triangle went awry publicly. Fans speculated that Rodrigo’s hit, driver’s licence, was about Carpenter with lines like, "And you're probably with that blonde girl / who always made me doubt.” In contrast, other fans argued that Carpenter was trying to “get under” Rodrigo’s skin. Drama aside – Carpenter has denied the claims – it’s a solid pop song that explores empowerment.

Why

Why, a bonus track from the Japanese edition of 2018’s Singular: Act I, is another electro-pop tune with trappings of hip-hop.

Carpenter explained about the cinematic track in an interview with iHeartRadio, "Why is a question we seem to pose daily, so there are multiple meanings within the song that are up to interpretation.

"We don’t necessarily need to be the same, to love the same. Sometimes differences can hold us together, and I think that’s a beautiful sentiment to how we deal with divergence and how it can furthermore prove our compatibility. In the end, we don’t really need to know 'why' if we are confident in our own emotions.”

Sue Me

Carpenter breathes sighs of relief after exiting a bad relationship on Sue Me. Like Why and Nonsense, Carpenter utilises trap-infused melodies to channel her inner confidence, independence and the sassier side of her personality.

On My Way

The one feature on this list, On My Way finds Carpenter on vocals on an Alan Walker track alongside Farruko. Utilising Walker’s signature bass-driven style and Farruko’s engaging Puerto Rican guest vocals, Carpenter provides a stunning chorus sure to move audiences.

You can catch Sabrina Carpenter live in Australia for the first time, opening for Taylor Swift in February 2024.
