Album Review: Tyne-James Organ – Persevere

An eerie guitar line rings through Something New, providing a dark and moody beginning to Melbourne-based singer Tyne-James Organ’s debut EP Persevere. Its thumping chorus is coated in glorious distortion; melting with Organ’s already gravely vocals, it's aggressive, powerful and rough.

Graceful, with a gently coated synth introduction leading into a shimmering chorus, is something out of a sunset festival scene, driven heavily by Organ’s raw, emotive vocals. On Watch You Go, Organ sings with pure conviction – it's a hauntingly delicate track about the loss of his father. Harmonised guitar and rising cymbal crashes rip out hearts with each building chorus before the song eventually settles down to conclude like the release of a long-held breath.

Raspiness and occasional vocal cracks convey authenticity and passion in I’ll Get By and the addition of an ethereal choir of "ooh"s under the final chorus transport the matter-of-fact track toward the heavens. Starting as a simple guitar-based ballad, Say No More quickly becomes engulfed in the gentle caress of soft strings. As it builds and builds, the reverberating guitar plucks, paired with soul-destroying lyrics – “Then just out of nowhere you told me you don’t feel the same" – make the perfect recipe for a tear-jerker, Organ’s vocal ability soaring to falsetto.
