Jenny Broke The Window have come a long way from shitty gigs in Wollongong, with their indie-pop licks easily adapting to the Metro main stage. If you caught them early in their career you wouldn't have commented on something missing or the need for more backline, but the additional drummer adds a level of intricacy to the bass-driven melodies that pulls the corners of your mouth towards your ears. Rum N' Cola and Fancy Dress stood out amongst the set, pulling them slowly away from their occasional Smiths-esque tilt and pushing them gently towards The Drums.
It's been five years and two albums since The Fratellis were on our shores. No wonder then that they had “a lot of songs to play so we're just going to get on with it”. They weren't kidding either, playing ten of 11 tracks off the new We Need Medicine album as well as ten of 13 from the smash Costello Music. The remainder featured a couple of amazing surprises including a cover of Runaround Sue and a rare airing of the unreleased track All The Livelong Day. Their loose style meant no track was played as per the record: Vince The Loveable Stoner had a few emphasis changes, For The Girl was on amphetamines while Whistle For The Choir was a mellow hoedown without a whistle. The highlight was the funk grind in the bridge of Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night. We Need Medicine played nicely into Until She Saves My Soul, with Jeannie Nitro gaining a harder edge and Shotgun Shoes channeling some Jagger swagger.
