Album Review: Quicksand - Interiors

Walter Schreifels is a man who has been there, done that and is now coming back to give it another go.

While blues-rock band Dead Heavens and punk troupe Vanishing Life dominated his recent musical endeavours, the late reunion blitz of Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools and Youth Of Today highlighted the ongoing relevance of his extensive and diverse back-catalogue. For 2017, it's Quicksand's turn to be revived by the ageless frontman.

Twenty-two years after their last album, the New York post-hardcore outfit have slightly softened the aggression on Interiors. Opener Illuminant and Under The Screw sound like they'd fit somewhere in Quicksand's previous collection save for Schreifels' vocals smoothing out with age.

Among the highlights, the quartet break from their previous sound and bring in their individual experiences from the last two decades. Cosmonauts, with its post-rock guitar motif and gentler sound, is an advancement for the band while title track Interiors is another slower sojourn that marks a change in direction.

Given his prolific songwriting and revolving door of projects, Interiors is a solid effort from Schreifels and co. Though it lacks the intensity of earlier records, it remains a welcome return for a band who had seemed to burn out bright and early.
