"To see Foot extend his views on current affairs is a bizarre wonder to behold."
At this point, in his sixth sojourn to Melbourne, it's common knowledge that Paul Foot is not your typical comic. As a contemporary and friend to the likes of Russell Brand and Noel Fielding (the latter of which directed his very first MICF show), Foot is no stranger to the weird, oddball side of modern comedy. That being said, Tis A Pity She's A Piglet sees Foot engage in some serious topical observations for the first time.
While it's definitely still erring on the side of Foot's trademark lunacy, there is a distinct change in tone to some of the comedian's earlier work. Foot tackles sexism in the everyday workplace, homophobia in the school ground, and punching a toy monkey in the face (okay, he hasn't changed that much). It's interesting to watch Foot engage in the serious issues in his own comic sphere. He has done so times before when appearing on topical panel shows abroad, but to see Foot extend his views on current affairs live on stage is a bizarre wonder to behold.
Foot has transitioned to bigger and bigger venues over his years at the festival, but in the relatively informal space of the Spiegeltent feels like he's finally found a place where he is able to run amok on his crowd while still allowing as many punters as possible. Returning connoisseurs may be surprised by what Foot has to offer, but none will be disappointed.
