Live Review: Olly Murs, Anja Nissen

Anja Nissen, The Voice 2014 winner, had the pleasure of opening the show. The blonde bombshell's vocals were great in Anyone Who Had A Heart, but at times she didn't hit the high notes. She gave the crowd a taste of her new album with tracks such as Triumph.

The lights dimmed and the crowd screamed with anticipation only to get the Pharrell Williams song Happy blasting in the theatre; this indeed created a happy atmosphere as everyone started to sing along. Olly Murs graced the stage with his presence while his band rocked out, before they launched into Heart Skips A Beat and Did You Miss Me. The lighting in the venue was a little blinding at times, with audience members looking away or holding their hands up like they were vampires scared of light, but thankfully this improved at the concert progressed.

Seasons excited the crowd before Anja Nissen came back onto the stage to perform Up with Murs; their vocals were amazing together. Murs interacted with the crowd in between songs the whole night, telling stories of backpacking in Australia for three months and seeing all the beautiful women, followed by Hey You Beautiful and Hand On Heart. There was a lot of pelvic thrusting and a few inappropriate jokes during Murs' interactions — for example, "He must be good with his fingers," when referring to his newly engaged guitarist. It was an all-ages show after all, with mothers taking their 10 to 15 year olds with them.

Dear Darlin' was a crowd pleaser while Let Me In was more emotional and heartfelt, with Murs sitting down onstage to sing the song. To get the mood back up, Murs jumped into funky music with Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music, before moving into Chic's Le Freak and ending with Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk. The atmosphere of the theatre changed dramatically, with most of the audience dancing or singing along. Can't Say No and Wrapped Up showed a more cheeky side to Murs, through his dancing and facial expressions.

Murs disappeared off stage after covering Bruno Mars' Treasure, only to reappear for an encore featuring his hit Troublemaker that had everyone up and out of their seats dancing. Murs performed a great set; vocally he was incredible and his dance moves were impressive. He could be considered the British version of Justin Timberlake.
