"They ran around the stage with the energy of men half their age."
Method Man and Redman took Adelaide by storm last night on the first stop of their national Australian tour, carrying on from dates in New Zealand. The energy, tight performance, nostalgia and gravitas all helped create a performance that would leave anyone with a smile plastered from ear to ear.
DJ Dice and Mathematics warmed up the crowd with a refresher course in '90s classics such as Snoop Dogg and even a few wildcards such as Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Queen's We Will Rock You. This occurred in between screams of "Do you love '90s music!?" It was all a bit of fun before Meth and Red stormed the stage and the show could begin. Larger than life, they ran around the stage with the energy of men half their age, performing songs from their records Blackout! and Blackout! 2 as well as their large range of collaborations that date as far back as 1994.
"Do you know how long it took to get through customs to get into this goddamn country!?" yells Red as Meth lights a blunt on stage. "There are two things y'all need to bring to a Methman and Redman show," says Meth. "Number one is weed! Number two is energy!" The crowd goes wild and the duo rip through their tunes with style and finesse, cementing the fact that they are currently performing on one of the best hip hop tours of the year. Redman was particularly inspiring, running around like a goofball and telling the crowd that "Y'all didn't come to Redman and Methman show not to play the fool a little!" Performing the final track with a towel around his head was icing on the cake.
While Method Man and Redman are gobsmacking and enthralling performers, DJ Dice and Mathematics also had their time to shine, showing off their turntabling skills to the audience. Of course, there are specific competitions for these types of tricks nowadays, but you seriously won't have seen or heard anything like what these two pull off (Mathematics was pulling moves usually reserved for the basketball court). There was not only a super awesome guest MC (who will not be revealed for the sake of the east coast fans), but Method Man and Redman ended the show with a bang, with Red diving into the crowd and Meth being held up by his ankles in all his glory.
