Live Review: Meg Mac

Enmore Theatre filled to the brim with keen punters as Meg Mac graced the stage, greeted with loud screams and excited grins before ploughing through her faultless set.

The lead vocals and harmonies flourished and filled the venue with an incredible aura for her track, Known Better. Mac, real name McInerney, mesmerised every member of the crowd with radiated confidence as she swept left and right in her magnificent cape. While she fluttered her vocal remained sustained; full, passionate and the complete focal point of the whole show. “I can’t believe I’m playing the Enmore Theatre!” she exclaimed, full of gratitude before she played Kindness from her debut album Low Blows. Regular tempo changes kept the audience on their toes, the vast juxtaposition making for a slightly wonky but thrilling listen.

Every Lie got everyone stomping and clapping. McInerney's growled final repetition of the bridge - “release my soul beneath my naked bones” - was a clear statement that the crowd would enter a whole new world of passion and angst in the second half of her set. “I wrote this in Sydney,” she said, before playing another Low Blow cut, Cages. The track showcased a rhythmic vocal call and response, and layering built from McInerney's powerful belting and the backing vocalists’ deep intensity. Then the spotlight landed on her as everyone else left the stage, and with just her loop pedal McInerney illuminated the whole room. The countless vocal layers she built were enchanting - all eyes were glued to her and the Enmore became significantly silent.

McInerney then played Maybe It’s My First Time the crowd were so pleased with her recent hit that a vigorous choir of voices joined McInerney’s. For Low Blows the crowd got their fists in the air, catching onto McInerney’s passion before the encore, Roll Up Your Sleeves. The uplifting track brought the show to a wonderful end. Couples cuddled and people smiled, and we left Enmore Theatre feeling brighter than before.
