Album Review: Love Fame Tragedy – I Don't Want To Play The Victim, But I’m Really Good At It

The Wombats' lead singer Matthew Murphy is diving into new territory as Love Fame Tragedy. Yet on his debut release, I Don’t Want To Play The Victim, But I’m Really Good At It, the opening riff of My Cheating Heart sounds eerily reminiscent of The Wombats’ White Eyes. Maybe it’s Murphy's instantly recognisable voice, but with its catchy guitar line, danceable beat and quirky melody, the song doesn’t differ greatly from past works. 

We do find diversity on Backflip – with a lower guitar line and slower pace, the track is dark. A soft female vocal adds to its ominous atmosphere. Pills takes us into a deeper electronic-pop area. It's nice to listen to but it feels very safe.

The sound of rain lingers behind a piano line for final track Brand New Brain. As soft guitar plays under a crisp drum beat, it's got all the elements of a heartbreaker. The track doesn’t go overboard, but maybe that’s what we needed.
