Thirty years ago Rattlesnakes saw the ladies swooning to the rather bookish charms of Lloyd Cole, gracing the charts with irresistible pop hooks. While pop stardom faded, Cole persists with this immaculate collection of reflective soft rockers. Cole leaves behind recent acoustic work to favour a fuller sound of a band that features Matthew Sweet and Joan As Police Woman. In shades of Dylan, Period Piece ruminates on the past to bittersweet effect while Silver Lake drifts into delicate heartbroken alt-country.
