Lawrence Leung: The Escapist

Lawrence Leung’s show is all about expectations and, with inspiration from Houdini, how we can escape from them.

His collection of stories ranged from the bizarre (a straitjacket purchased from a Romanian fetish website), through the concerning (removing varicose veins while on work experience), to the stereotypical (his Asian parents’ assumption he would become a doctor). To reinforce his inner nerdiness there was even a small display of his magic skills. A few remarks and asides did seem a little wedged in but Leung’s smile and enthusiasm throughout sustained a degree of sympathy for his tales and dilemmas. And that’s despite his “resting sad face” syndrome!
