Live Review: Kucka, Mudlark, FM

There's something about single launches that are simply fantastic to watch. From cute parental shout-outs to a real energy performing new material, they are a treat for audiences and musicians alike. When the music is as good as the sleek, danceable compositions put forward by Perth's Kucka, the experience is increased tenfold. The Bird was filled to the brim on Saturday as Kucka and company put forward a selection of catchy electronica. A series of artists and producers including Mudlark and FM added to the atmosphere. The breezy electronic beats coasted along throughout the evening and perfectly segued into the main act.
Kucka – flanked by two production partners – brought colour, melody and excitement to her performance. With keytar in hand, Kucka was at home on the stage. Layered synthesisers and intricate drum sections complemented the pretty vocals. Kucka certainly has an ear for melody and lyrical enunciation to transform tracks into instant sing-alongs. A huge white backdrop also allowed her to display tailor-made visuals. Created by a duo from Vienna and synchronised to the beats, the visuals added yet another layer to the performance. Our senses were on overdrive trying to process the multitude of sounds, colours, patterns and shapes. The morphing shapes (at times resembling breakfast cereal treats) evolved with the songs and elevated the performance into an all-out artistic experience. By the time Kucka got around to performing her new single Unconditional, the audience was putty in her hands. Dancing was compulsory while Kucka's live performance capabilities never missed a beat. If more material of this quality is on the way, I'm sure we will all be hearing Kucka's name much more in the future.
