Live Review: Kllo, Martin King, Corin Ileto

Harpoons DJs welcome the first spectators with rich, eclectic house sounds borrowing from kuduro, Afro and Latin influences. In contrast, Corin Ileto's performance incorporates raw, experimental techno-pop melodies and Ryuichi Sakamoto-inspired sounds that impress and intrigue. Watching Ileto's hands jump over the keyboards with such dexterity is fascinating.

Now it's Martin King's time to step up. King's performance is marked by its spontaneity and genuineness. Juliet Rowe, whose vocals feature on King's song Guilt Trip makes several appearances, bringing interesting soul and R&B accents to his productions.

Finally, after much anticipation Kllo's members Chloe Kaul and Simon Lim hit the stage. Performing at Howler tonight, the Melburnian duo are clearly at home. In front of an already convinced audience, the pair start their set with Don't Be The One from their newly released EP Well Worn. With its sweet vocal samples, the track is reminiscent of French electro, embodied by artists such as Fakear or Thylacine. The audience sing along with the chorus during the outfit's third song Walls To Build.

The strength of the duo lies in their extraordinary lunar energy, supported by a well-executed light show. The crowd is surprisingly noisy at the back of the venue, but Kaul and Lim perform seamlessly, effortlessly demanding our attention. The next song interpreted by the duo, Make Me Wonder, is one of their very first releases from back in 2014. Throughout their Well Worn EP, Kaul and Lim excel in asserting and reinforcing a similar organic-yet-celestial style.

Applause spreads throughout the room as the first notes of the eagerly awaited Bolide ring out. The gifted pair leave their audience mesmerised. Kaul's voice is that of an enchantress over the R&B beats and bass. Full of emotion, Kaul addresses the crowd: ''It is our biggest show in Melbourne yet. Soon we are going overseas and could not do it without you guys. Thank you.'' Kllo's music is a beautiful oddity.
