Album Review: Jacob - Show Me Some Passion

There’s no question that the indie-rock and the punk scene have had a large local resurgence of late and with that, there runs a risk of monotony and unoriginality. Even though it treads water at times, the sound from New South Wales outfit Jacob’s second release Show Me Some Passion is a fun and refreshing take on emo-rock.

Without skipping a beat Baby, I’m A Blockhead, takes over with some thrashing and crashing guitar riffs and drum lines. Jacob are excellent at creating songs that manifest a sense of mateship and community from their infectious chanted choruses. Almost every song carries an anthem to jump and shout out, glass in hand. Special Kind Of Love provides us with surfy undertones from its simple guitar riff and harmonious vocals which is then paired with some jazzy “oohs” and “bop bops”, a unique contrast of '20s scat style melodies and modern grunge musicality. 

Say Anything and Passing Slowly’s jumpy hi-hat thrashing provide some perfect head banging beats. How I Get Sometimes is a favourite; a yelly, open-hearted track about loneliness and masking pain where Jacob shine through in their authentically emotive state of mind.
