Live Review: I Prevail, Void Of Vision, Belle Haven

There's no time for a snooze as Melbourne hardcore act Belle Haven slam onto the stage with latest single The Carving Knife, annihilating the eardrums of anyone stranded without earplugs. The harmonies in the clean vocals are a nice contrast to their heavy sound and vocalist David De La Hoz is incredibly charismatic as he works the room. Despite the awkward moment when three members flimsily throw their instruments in the air, giving everyone in the room heightened anxiety, Belle Haven have a tight sound with a punching bass line further proving their ability to get a crowd going.

Second Melbourne act of the night Void Of Vision step onto the stage wearing matching outfits featuring their own band merch, but they somehow make it look cool. Lead singer Jack Bergin sports compression gear under his clothes, which makes sense considering energy is maintained at 110% from start to finish. With coordinated breakdown jumping, Bergin constantly keeps the audience's blood pumping. Void Of Vision are pros, their deep and heavy bass line rips right through chests leaving us exhausted but invigorated.

The lights are low as the highly anticipated boys from Detroit, I Prevail, take the stage for the third stop on their Australian tour. I Prevail are seasoned performers and explosive on stage. They kick off with Come And Get It and everyone screams, "I am, I am the headline," referencing the band's backdrop banner. I Prevail sincerely show their gratitude and passion for what they do in the way they perform with raw emotion and keep the energy set at full speed ahead.

A mid-set break sees us witnessing a roasting of guitarist Dylan Bowman. Responding to these harsh comments, Bowman plays a series of short covers including Avril Lavigne's Complicated, which is an interesting segue into their cover of Taylor Swift's Blank Space (a major fan favourite that gave the band early recognition and a Gold certification back in 2014).

I Prevail are all about following your dreams. "It's never too late and it's never too early," is how clean vocalist Brian Burkheiser encourages the mixed-aged audience to follow their passions. The band works together in complete harmony with the contrasting vocals of Eric Vanlerberghe and Burkheiser as well as explosive breakdowns that could rip you apart. The Detroit rockers are a force to be reckoned with and this is only the beginning.
