Live Review: Gyroscope, Horror My Friend, Crum

Opening the night, we have Gold Coast three-piece Crum. There’s some simple questions thrown around as soon as they take the stage: is this Silverchair? Nirvana? Even better, it’s neither of these bands. With incredible levels of grunge and angsty drums, Crum deliver a powerful performance and even decimate two cymbals on their drum kit. The wait for more material to be released from these boys is undoubtedly going to be worthwhile.

After a few quick equipment changeovers, our fave Adelaide band Horror My Friend take yet another Brisbane stage. Even with the stage split in half by a drum kit, frontmen Josh Battersby and Tom Gordon still jump around and once again prove to their interstate fans why they’re one of the best rock groups in Australia right now. Starting off on a lower spectrum, it’s still amazing seeing so many people riled-up for Stay In, Admit None and fan favourite DIYS. Premiering a new track, Horror My Friend continuously tease and bless their fanbase.

And finally, as the lights dim, the entirety of Woolly Mammoth is packed out and a massive crowd roar deafens the ears of all as Gyroscope jump out on stage. Launching into an enigmatic display of movement and over-driven guitar, frontman Daniel Sanders has already worked up a sweat to the point where his shirt’s off. With the microphone falling to the ground during Dabs, the second song of their set, Sanders opts for singing and playing guitar on the floor rather than putting it back up. The crowd goes wild.

Nothing, however, can equate to the crowd reaction as soon as that familiar guitar riff of Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning comes into play. While the song carries incredible meaning, it’s even more nostalgic hearing it only a few short months after the Oils’ massive world tour. It’s an incredible way to carry on the strength of the show. It’s a breathtaking and indescribable performance. Gyroscope truly know how to put on an amazing show.
