Live Review: FOMO Festival Brisbane

FOMO can be defined as the emotional strain caused by the fear of missing out. It is a feeling well-known to the majority of millennials; from missing out on tickets to a festival or agreeing to go on a night out you didn't want to. Well fear no more millennials, Australian one-day festival FOMO is here with a clash-free day full of tunes and food at Brisbane’s Riverstage.

Kicking off the festival in the early hours of the afternoon is Carmouflage Rose, Loud Luxury and Anna Lunoe, delivering filthy electronic beats.

Kali Uchis is an artist that has been on many a ‘must see’ list. There is something that is effortlessly stunning about her onstage presence as she takes the audience on a journey through her heartfelt tracks. Finishing her set with 2018 hit After The Storm, Uchis announces her appreciation to her fans saying that it is her first time in Australia. After this performance it is clear that this angelic songstress is one to keep an eye on.

Mura Masa surprises everyone with his live DJ set that includes him belting the drums for hits such as 1 Night, Nuggets and crowd favourite Love$ick. Excitement rises in the crowd as hype-duo Rae Sremmurd blast No Type. Yelling to the crowd to "start a pit", a half-arsed circle forms for the first minute of Black Beatles. A questionable move but all is forgotten as the pair manage to bring up the energy, announcing their whereabouts for the after party and building up the anticipation for what is yet to come.

It is evident that that rapper Nicki Minaj is the crowd's pick of the day, as festival-goers swarm every inch of the amphitheatre to get as close to the stage as possible. Talking about the stage, her set-up is nothing less than a visual playground, featuring unicorns and angel wings and a bubble-gum dress code upheld by both Minaj and her dancers. Playing to her strengths and delivering the majority of her own tracks, Minaj also throws in beloved pop songs that she’s also contributed to. Feeling Myself and Side To Side  have the audience singing word for word. A lucky Brisbane boy takes the stage to receive a lap dance from not only the Queen herself but also her dancers, before she goes on to rap her verse from Kanye West’s hit Monster, with no backing track necessary. Super Bass ends the night on an all-time high and her fans are left sweaty, sunburnt and wanting more. It’s safe to say that Minaj knows what they want to hear and she will go above and beyond to deliver.

Fairly fresh in the festival scene, FOMO organisers have truly outdone themselves with a day of blistering beats and killer electronic tunes and hip hop acts.
