Ilic comes across a little like the “cool lecturer” but fortunately none of his subject matter is dry.
At first it is a little strange to be encountering television all-rounder Dan Ilic in person, but it turns out his live presence is more endearing than his more self-assured, know-it-all television persona. Not your conventional stand-up, Ilic is aided by a slideshow set-up, which he uses for visual prompts for his anecdotes and to display videos he has created throughout his career. Ilic comes across a little like the “cool lecturer” but fortunately none of his subject matter is dry. Much of the show is framed by his family (his brother is in the audience tonight) and heritage, especially the looming shadow of Black Hand member and near namesake (though no relation) Danilo Ilić. Despite his obvious humour, intelligence and media talents this show is at its best when Ilic admits to the difficulties of pushing the boundaries through comedy, giving us a look behind the work he proudly displays on the screen tonight.
