Live Review: Cashmere Cat, Strict Face, TRFK, Thrillho

Wrapping up the final leg of his Australian tour, Norwegian DJ wunderkind Cashmere Cat played a sold-out event at Adelaide's favourite rave-cave.

The event kicked off with an intense three-hour block of beats from Thrillho, TRFK and Strict Face. This was a warm welcome to the handful of people queuing for last-minute tickets and seeking refuge from the rain. However, those who made it in early were treated to a nice selection of floor fillers and complimentary glitter face paint. These support acts were instrumental in elevating expectations of what was to come! 

At 12.30am, and not a minute later, Magnus August Hoiberg (aka Cashmere Cat) graced the stage with his long, dishevelled locks. Known for his unique genre-crossing cuts of R&B, deep and tropical house, Hoiberg is a favourite among connoisseurs of modern electronic music. With many notable releases to his name, the DJ/producer delved into his past and opened the set with Kiss Kiss, a track off the Mirror Maru EP. This was met with extreme satisfaction from his longtime fanbase, resulting in multiple cheers rising from the audience.

The reason for tonight's event was to celebrate the producer's star-studded debut album, 9. While the album features catchy hooks sung by the biggest names in pop music, Hoiberg performed on his own without the aid of these live collaborators this evening, which meant that he focused on showing off his production work and mixing abilities. The longtime Ariana Grande collaborator showcased their work history by mixing in early releases such as Adore with the most recent, Quit. Hoiberg's history of high-profile collaborators did not stop there. Wolves from Kanye West's The Life Of Pablo sent the audience into a frenzy. Capitalising on this energy, Hoiberg mixed it into his Selena Gomez and Tory Lanez hit, Trust Nobody.  

The title track from his debut album, featuring Danish singer MO and Scottish producer Sophie, was also met with much excitement. In contrast, an unreleased track was a source of confusion at first before a wave of iPhones hurriedly captured the moment. 

About 45 minutes through the set, the producer decided to elongate the drops in his tracks. At one point, there was a 30-second pause, an air of silence, before the music started again. This happened several times, agitating and confusing the audience somewhat. Interestingly, the crowd started chanting for What So Not, thinking that the set was done and dusted. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable performance and proved that the producer had the entire audience captivated by his presence and eager to find out what he was going to do next.
