Live Review: Big Scary, CC: Disco!, Cub Sport

Cub Sport show off their brand-spankin'-new merchandise by wearing freshly branded long-sleeve shirts.

"We're going to play a few new songs tonight; this one's called Hawaiian Party," says lead singer Tim Nelson. It's a slow-grooving tropical anthem to lift us up with some impressive skyrocketing falsettos.

The group shares some more new tracks with some experimental electronic sounds. They also include a moving new emotional piano driven ballad with relatable lyrics for anyone who's ever questionably fucked up in a relationship: "What did I do? Do I deserve you?" Nelson repeats. Their fans can't get enough of their 2016 triple j Like A Version cover of Kanye West’s Ultralight Beam, so they're still playing it at their live shows a year later and the crowds are still loving it.

CC:Disco! keeps things lively by mixing up some funky jams for everyone to dance along to between sets so there's no awkward breaks, only non-stop party anthems for a feelgood Friday night.

Big Scary cast shadows against the backdrop of creased, colour-changing panels. Tom Iansek releases his breathy vocals and Jo Syme unleashes her hypnotic drumming rhythms on the haunting Double Darkness. Iansek’s looking very dapper, dressed in a suit for this formal occasion of their biggest headlining tour to date, and the first time playing at The Forum. "Jo and I have played in some of Melbourne's smallest and dingiest pubs and now we're playing here for you tonight. It's a dream come true to play in this venue."

It’s been almost a year since they released their third album, Animal, and we’re finally getting to celebrate the record properly tonight. Along with some additional touring members, they make up a five-piece band to deliver an incredible live performance. The saxophonist delivers some killer solos, and the majestic piano melodies reel us in. Although it’s a celebration of their latest album, they also share some beloved older tracks, including Falling Away and Twin Rivers. Syme then takes a break from her drums and moves forward to take on lead vocals for Harmony Sometimes.

For those who might not have been lucky enough to catch Big Scary playing at a festival in the past year, tonight is well worth the wait to see them finally set the ‘Animal’ free.
