Live Review: Baauer, Yung Lean, Just A Gent, Collarbones

This was a line-up bursting with creativity. From the mesmerising sad-pop of Collarbones, to the modern day trap of Baauer, there was something for everyone from this show (apart from grime lovers as a result of Stormzy pulling out). This was a straight up dance show – one of many recent events that Thebarton Theatre has recently hosted such as What So Not with A-Trak and RL Grime with Boys Noize.

Even though the crowd wasn’t huge, those who showed up were passionate about their dance music, moshing to just about any bass-heavy beat the DJs played. Latecomer to the line-up and Stormzy replacement Just A Gent took the stage with a young but energetic crowd, busting out some of his well-loved classics alongside a John Farnham remix - you couldn’t get more Australian than that. Fresh from covering Kid Cudi on triple j’s Like A Version, the Newcastle boy was no doubt on top of his game as he set the vibe with his fantastic breed of dance music.

It was sadboy galore as Yung Lean took to the stage, complete with a rap partner and DJ. Baseball cap donning, sports polo wearing vaporwave boys lined the walls in true sadboy fashion as the Swedish rapper poured his heart out over bass-rich beats and 808 drums. Those who weren’t familiar with Yung Lean’s music were sure to not understand a single word of his rap due to his dosage of way too much AutoTune and reverb, though the crowd seemed to love it all the same.

There was a notable amount of people who left following Yung Lean, potentially due to a huge number of dedicated followers turning up to his debut Adelaide performance. Despite this, those who were left were people who loved their trap music. Baauer is a heavyweight of the genre, putting out the (in)famous Harlem Shake to the world and following it up with trap anthems such as Infinite Daps and GoGo!. Those who stayed received exactly what they’d hoped for – a near hour-long set of originals and well-curated trap bangers, packed in with fantastic mixes and drop after drop after drop.
