Live Review: Amy Shark, Timberwolf, Nyck

It was hard to know what to expect from an Amy Shark show. With a limited discography — no albums or EPs to her name yet, just a few (albeit great) singles — what was the Gold Coast singer-songwriter's set going to comprise of? The uncertainty didn't seem to discourage fans from braving a cold, rainy Saturday night to pack out the terminal Newtown Social Club for the third show on her sold-out national tour.

Nick Acquroff and Dominique Garrard of Nyck warmed up the crowd with their beautiful harmonies, the Melbourne indie electronic duo managing to capture the attention of early arrivals throughout their entire set.

Adelaide's Timberwolf (aka Chris Panousakis) then captivated and mesmerised the crowd with his warm voice and enthralling lyrics, accompanied solely by his guitar and a stomp box. After sharing an anecdote about a seagull, the funny and very charismatic songwriter joked about it being a marine-themed set for Amy Shark. After a rendition of Hound Dog and some standout performances of songs Hold You Up and Washed Out from his forthcoming debut album, Timberwolf left the stage to applause.

Amy Shark and her band came on shortly after and, in disbelief regarding the amount of people in the room, Shark asked the crowd, "Do you guys have nothing else to do tonight?" before thanking them for having faith. She played a bunch of songs the crowd hadn't heard before like a track called Blood Brothers from her soon-to-be-released EP Night Thinker. She played a few old ones, too, picking up her electric guitar for the very catchy Spits On Girls and her acoustic for Golden Fleece.

Shark was incredibly down-to-earth, and delved into the stories that inspired her songs and shared how she felt while writing them. Her humour was infectious and, despite the room being at capacity, the concert felt very intimate. She hyped up the crowd, showing off her rap skills with a cover of Eminem's Superman, and played her new track Weekends — despite it only being released the day before, the crowd already knew all the words and sang them back to her.

Then, the moment everyone was waiting for: she finished her set on the ultimate high with Adore. Fans sang the song, word for word, watching as Shark jumped around the stage. A phenomenal set — that's what to expect from an Amy Shark show.
