"Alison Moyet's force of nature voice remains as arrestingly powerful as ever."
35 years into a career which started in synth-pop classic partnership Yazoo, Alison Moyet's force of nature voice remains as arrestingly powerful as ever.
This ninth album occasionally captures familiar breezes from her past - Lover, Go has hints of a reuniting with Vince Clarke (but isn't) and The Rarest Birds could have been plucked from her early '90s powerful soul-rock peak. Alive's massive production marries eco-frustration with emotional hunger, Moyet practically clawing out of the speakers in desperation but best of all is the Vangelis-like intimidation of Reassuring Pinches. Other reminds us there's nobody quite like Alf.
