Underground Playlists are back and better than ever, thanks to the legends at Mountain Goat Beer. In fact, we’ve decided to pick out our favourite tracks each week and share them with you, so you can get to know the best of the bunch and keep your finger on the pulse. Here are this week's top picks for our Underground Playlists...
Even Cowgirls Cry
Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys have brought out the big guns for their most recent single, Even Cowgirls Cry, which delves down the path of sweet, sad country that we all know and love. Like Julia Jacklin or Middle Kids, Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys bring such an air of cool to country with funky horn segments, inspired lyrics and Harnett’s crooning vocals. It could be easy to jive along to this track at either a packed-out gig or alone in your car, singing your little heart out.
ALMOST FAMOUS
Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter
Revered artist Agung Mango is on the precipice of something huge, and we think that ALMOST FAMOUS might have pushed him over the edge. Complex, catchy and filled with an additive slow groove attitude, ALMOST FAMOUS puts Mango up there with the elites. Sonically, the track gives us a classic hip-hop ride, but focusing further, it encompasses layer after layer of small details that truly make the production in this song outstanding. Melody Napoleon also proves the perfect addition, complimenting Mango’s style perfectly., adding his own sensual verse.
Tired
King of alt-indie pop Yb. has dropped his newest offering in the form of Tired, a slow and guitar-driven track that sees the singer step up to new levels. Lyrically, the song tells a tale of regret, new beginnings, and a feeling of hopelessness, but sonically, Yb. portrays a cheerful and positive outlook through the rhythmic acoustic guitar and joyful chorus. More than ever, this song sees Yb. dip a toe into the pop arena, especially in the chorus, which feels bigger than anything he’s attempted before. Take our word for it, this one will be a hit in no time.
King Of Disappointment
Meanjin/Queensland singer/songwriter Jem Cassar-Daley has again delivered a cracker of a song in King Of Disappointment. Pulling straight from her own experiences, Cassar-Daley has woven a beautiful song about being stood up and feeling the keen sting of disappointment - a feeling everybody can relate to. Reminiscent of Taylor Swift or Gretta Ray, Cassar-Daley has an unbeatable talent for twisting the truth into something that sounds so much sweeter. Her vocals are, as usual, such a highlight in this track as she lulls you into bliss.
Disrupt
Eora/Sydney-based alt-rock artist PENI PARKER has revealed her soul-stirring new single, Disrupt, which will definitely have you headbanging along. Quicker than Parker's usual songs, Disrupt is two and a half minutes of pure energy, with crashing symbols, electric guitar riffs and Parker's impressive vocals. Documenting her life through 2022, Disrupt channels all the pent-up rage that sat with Parker and lets it out in one massive chaotic song.
